Antenatal Shared Care

Antenatal shared care is a popular choice for healthy women with a normal pregnancy.

In choosing shared care you will:

• have most of your pregnancy care at Carlton Medical Centre, with an accredited shared care doctor, who has extra training in pregnancy care;
• see the same doctor, so you build a relationship with your doctor and can continue to see them after your baby is born;
• be able to choose the day and time of most of your antenatal check-ups, subject to your doctor’s availability; and
• have fewer hospital visits (usually between 3-4).

If you develop problems during your pregnancy, the hospital may take over your care and shared care would cease.

Once your pregnancy is confirmed by your GP your care options, including shared care, will be discussed.

When you are first seen at the hospital, you will be given the choice of doing shared care if you are healthy with a normal pregnancy. Please let the hospital know that you would like to do shared care

When you start shared care, the hospital will provide you with:

• Your pregnancy record;
• Forms for any tests to be performed at the hospital; and
• A schedule of visits for your pregnancy care (please note that the hospital visits will be made for you, but you will need to organise your own local doctor appointments). Each hospital has a slightly different schedule of visits.
